Biking is not a major sport in New Zealand. Many New Zealand students, however, are interested in biking, in part because so
many bike to school. While this has declined in recent years, there are still quite a number of New Zealand students that bike to
school.
During the Term I holidays SHC sent a team to the National
Secondary Schools Nationals in Levin. The competition
events included an undulating Cross Country (XC) course, a particularly nasty uphill race and a fast and technical high speed downhill (DH). Bradley Scott, Felipe Martins and Philip and Martin Vlaskovsky represented the school in the junior division. Martin and Bradley placed a creditable 19th and 24th respectively in the XC. Bradley pedalled with consistency to place 24th on the Uphill. With a solid performance in the Downhill, Bradley achieved 20th place overall.
Matthew Scott and Brent Harcombe were our representatives in the Intermediate category. With around 140 competitors in this category, the competition was fierce. Both Matthew and Brent experienced difficulties in the Cross Country event and finished below their best. Both students put everything into the final event, the Downhill with Matthew placing 35th overall. The team would like to thank Mrs Scott and Mrs Potter for their help with transport and in making sure the trip was such a success.
