Figure 1.--

Cricket Crazy

It was 1 hour 'till the big match
I was really psyched
I couldn't drive the car
I couldn't run, so I biked.
I put my bag on my back
It was really heavy
It weights my bike down a lot
I wish I took the Chevy.
I arrived at the park
'Twas 5 minutes to the start
rushed over to the bag
A ball hit my heart.
I fell on the ground
Flat on my back
I think I broke my spinal cord
I landed with such a whack.
A minute later I awoke
My brain was in a muddle
I wished I had my Mum there
Just to give a cuddle.
I arose up off the ground
And stood up on my feet
I realised I was opening
With my best friend Pete.
I padded up as quick as I could
Donned a helmet with a clutter
I thought I heard Pete say something
But it was just a mutter.
The first ball was a shocker
It was a mile wide
I hit it so hard and fast
It made the fielders hide.
The 4s were coming thick and fast
My bat was nearly dead
A century was approaching soon
I just had to keep a cool head.
Then from my bat a might shot
That flew into the stand
I raised my arms with great delight
As the crowd gave me a hand.
I walked over to the team
To tell that that I'd retire
When they asked me why I did
I said "Cause I'll hit a skyer".
When our team had finished
The score was 306
The first ball that I bowled
Cleaned out the openers sticks.
For the next 5 balls
The batsmen were outplayed
The wickets kept on falling
And the batsmen's bats decayed
Well, the opposing teams innings
Ended with a mere 43
But at the end of the day
The congratulations went to me.
I said "Steady on chaps",
It was the team not me
If I didn't have the partners
I would not have a century.

The "Report"

The girls 1st XI cricket team has been very ably led by Kelly Sutherland this year. She is an excellent all-rounder and has played for the Hawke’s Bay Women’s Cricket XI. As an opening bat, she is technically very sound, which her individual scores and overall averages do not fully reflect.

Against CHB she twice batted against the NZ A bowler Aroha Nootheuer with little difficulty, but for few runs, hoping to capitalise on the weaker bowling to come, only to fall just at the end of the allotted overs. She also bowls very well, showing good pace and swinging the ball into the right-handers. Greater consistency of line and length will bring significantly better rewards.

Hilary Sutherland is proving an excellent, composed and fast-improving wicket keeper. She misses little and has been recognised as talent to watch, having been chosen to represent Hawke’s Bay Women’s Cricket XI at Palmerston North last month (March). Hilary’s batting continues to improve too; she is always hard to dismiss, frustrating the bowling attack and ensuring the team makes good use of the overs available.

The cricketing talents of the Sutherlands wouldn’t be able to flourish without positive and committed team members. Fortunately the Girls’ 1st XI has team spirit in abundance! The five Form 7 girls, Fiona McLachlan, Liz Bruce, Rosie Howell, Emma Donnelly and Kim Bartlett make sure everyone is on their toes, focused and committed. Rosie and Liz have contributed strongly in bowling, taking 25 wickets between them. Rosie’s 6 for 9 off 5 overs was a just reward for continually pitching the ball well up and straight! Fiona’s batting maybe hasn’t (as yet!) brought the runs that it promises. Generally batting at No.3 she faces the best of opposition bowling, playing better than her average suggests. Emma Donnelly and Kim Bartlett didn’t get many chances to bat, but nevertheless played their part in fielding well. Both Bridgette McEntee and Rebekah Hanna have shown a lot of promise in turning in good bowling and batting performances. Of the younger players also in the team, F3 Anna Brimer has bowled extremely straight; F4 Claire McEntee shows good all-round potential; F4 Gemma Guilford both fields and bats soundly and F4 Emma Wood, though technically raw, has an excellent eye, hitting the ball harder than any of the team.

All in all, a great start to 1999 for the Girls’ 1st XI Cricket Team. These girls really enjoy themselves and the cricket!

Form 4 Boys' Cricket

Two fourth form teams were entered in the Secondary Schools grades this year, although form three boys were used to bolster the numbers in the second team. If judged by results alone, the teams do not appear to have been very successful. They did, however, put together several innings of character, salvaging their self-respect through dogged rear-guard efforts. The year can also be seen to have been successful from the point of view of grooming players for the future, with two boys already promoted to the first Xl, and others doubtless will follow. Noteworthy innings were scored by Ben Cook, Craig Primmer, Carey Graydon, Jamie Helms and Matthew Cummings. In one match for the B-team, Nick Wards took a hat-trick, and Paul Thompson was usually among the wickets for the A's.
