The most destinctive aspect of New Zealand school uniform garments is that short trousers and knee socks are till commonly worn. This is the case for most New Zealand schools, including both primary and secondary schools. Most secondary school boys have traditionally short trousers. There are substantial differences, however, from school to school. They have been mostly dark or mid-grey shorts. A few schools influenced by a Scottish school wear dark blue shorts. A few other colors are worn, but they are not common. There are both pants worn for summer and winter seasonal uniforms. A common summer uniform is light-weight cotton drill grey shorts with a matching shirt. A more formal heavy-weight pair of shorts is worn during the winter. At some schools all boys wear short trousers, although the dress uniform may include long trousers. Some schools in recent years have made short pants optional. Short pants when worn are worn with either kneesocks or without socks when wearing sandals. We do not notice ankle socks being worn with shorts. Shorts are only worn by boys. The styling of the shorts have remained fairly standard, but the length of the shorts tens to follow contemporary fashion trends. Girls except for gym and sports do not wear shorts.

Boys wear short trousers in both primary and secondary schools. Most primary schools do not have uniforms so the boys wore theur own trousers, Shorts were commonly worn to school because they were so common in New Zealand. Some primary schools had uniforms, especially the Catholic schools and the private schools, almost all of which have short psnts uniforms. Most secondary school boys have traditionally short trousers. Most schhols require the younger boys to wear shorts. There are substantial differences, however, from school to school. The blue shorts for some reason seem most common at boys' schools.
Schools have different color short trousers as part as their school uniforms. Boys at most schools primarily wear dark or mid-grey shorts. This follows the basic school uniform whivch developed in Britain. Grey is a neutral color which did not show dirt. It also went well with what ever school color that msy be chosen fgor caps, blazers, and ties. There were different shades of grey, but grey shorts are very commonly worn throughout New Zealand. We see boys wearing both black and grey long trousers, but we did not note black shorts. A few schools influenced by a Scottish school wear dark blue shorts. The blue shorts are all dark navy blue shorts. Unlike the grey shorts, we do not notice different shades of blue. A few other colors are worn, but they are not common. Mostly we see grey shorts and to a lesser extent blue shorts.
