Individual School Uniform Regulations: State Coed Secondary Schools

Figure 1.--

Unifiorms while very common at New Zealand schools are quite varied. Schools also vary as to how strictly they are enforced. Sample regulations at representative schhols are presented here. Many schools still have very detailed, specific regulations. Others have only general guidelines. The uniform regulations vary widely depending on the type of school and age levels as well as the gender of the student. Most also have different summer and winter uniforms. Generally speaking the coed secondary schools have the most relaxed uniform regulations. A few are quite strict, but some have even abandoned uniforms all together--mostly schools in Auvckland.

First School

One school on South Island during 1999 had the following regulations. The school indicates that "We feel that our uniform reflects the innovative and progressive image of our school. It is a uniform that the students are proud to wear."

Girls' Uniform

Boys' Uniform

Physical Education

Cycle Helmets

Cycle helmets for all cyclists are a legal requirement.

Second School

One school on South Island during 1999 had the following regulations. A condition of enrolment is that all students are required to wear the correct uniform. Worn neatly, uniform reflects the wearer's pride in themselves and the school. We ask for the support of parents to ensure that the highest standard of dress is maintained at all times. More details regarding uniform standards are given here.

Boys & Girls

Dress - General

Jewellery is not permitted, except for a watch and single plain earrings in pierced ears. Cosmetics are not permitted. Hairstyles must be neat and tidy. Extreme hairstyles are not acceptable. If scarves or woollen hats are worn they must be in regulation colours.

Suppliers

Articles of school clothing can be obtained from local drapers, John Darby (Hornby), Lithgow's (Riccarton), Direct Uniforms, 435 Colombo St., and Ballantynes. The firms which stock our uniform also stock for other schools and between Christmas and the beginning of February these shops are extremely busy. Parents are strongly advised to order early.

Uniform Exchange

The Friends of the School Association (PTA) runs a uniform exchange where parents can buy/sell/exchange school clothing. Towards the end of January a 'bring and buy' sale of second-hand clothing takes place in the school auditorium. The date is published at the end of the previous year. This scheme relies on the co-operation of parents in making available good used items of school clothing. You may contact the PTA member in charge of the clothing exchange through the school office.

School Expectations

The following rules are not designed to restrict students unduly, but to form the basis for responsible action. The best rule could be stated to be "Use courtesy and common sense."

1. Each student must be neatly dressed with the correct uniform and footwear. A full description of the school uniform is given here.

a. School Uniform - general notes

The school's colours are royal blue and gold. The correct uniform must be worn at school and to and from school. The wearing of the full school uniform is compulsory. The Principal and staff would appreciate the co-operation of parents in seeing that the uniform is worn correctly, with strict regard to rules concerning jewellery and hair. Note also: It is important that ALL articles of school clothing are clearly named. Either summer or winter uniform is to be worn, not a mixture of both. Winter uniform must be worn from the third week of May until the end of term three. Skirts are to be of knee length. T-shirts, singlets, non-regulation skivvies and the like must not be visible. Regulation shoes must be worn. Scarves or woollen hats must be in regulation colours - either navy blue or blue/gold. Jackets must be navy. Tracksuit tops, Bush shirts, fashion and multi-coloured jackets are not acceptable as coats.

Students who, for some genuine reason, are unable to wear full regulation uniform are required to obtain permission from their Dean. A permit will be issued to such students as long as they provide an explanatory letter signed by their parent/caregiver. The permit must be applied for before 8:30am on the first day the item of non-regulation clothing is worn. A permit will only allow non-regulation items to be worn for a period of time considered sufficient to overcome the immediate difficulty.

b. Physical Education Uniform (Boys' & Girls')

All students are required to change at least outer clothing for P.E. and sports classes. Any combination of T-shirt with short sleeves, sweat top or jersey and track pants and/or shorts which is non-offensive and suitable for physical activity, is permitted. Sports shoes and socks are recommended, but bare feet are permitted.

c. General Appearance

Students' appearance at all times should conform to acceptable standards. Cosmetics are not permitted. Hair must be clean, tidy and clear of the face. Not too long to be dangerous in workshops, etc. Extreme hairstyles are not permitted. Boys must be clean shaven - no moustaches or beards. Jewellery is not permitted, except for a watch and a single plain earring in each pierced ear. Jewellery may be confiscated and placed in the school safe to be picked up by the student or parent after a suitable time. Taonga (Bone or greenstone carving) may be worn next to the skin at the base of the neck on the collar bone. They may only have a thin leather strap or woven flax cord.

Third School
