Unifiorms while very common at New Zealand schools are quite varied. Schools also vary as to how strictly they are enforced. Sample regulations at representative
schhols are presented here. Many schools still have very detailed, specific regulations. Others have only general guidelines. The uniform regulations vary widely
depending on the type of school and age levels as well as the gender of the student. Most also have different summer and winter uniforms. Generally speaking the girls secondary schools have the most strict uniformmregulations of all the different types of schools in the state syste. These schools usually have comparable, if not quites elaborate uniforms, as private girls' schools.
Regulations
One school on South Island during 1999 had the following regulations.
Juniors (Year 9-11)*
Summer (Terms 1 and 4)
- Regulation navy-blue pinafore frock worn level with lower knee.
- Short white ankle socks (not slouch socks).
Dark brown T-bar sandals or regulation leather lace-up school shoes, college brown with low heel.
- Navy-blue V-necked pullover in inclement weather.
- Navy-blue School blazer with monogram on breast pocket for street wear.
Summer (Terms 1 and 4)
- A kilt, worn 7cms length below the knee, in regulation pure wool worsted material which may be bought locally or made to measure from Helean Kiltmakers in Dunedin.
- Long-sleeved white blouse (Boston 2A or Grayson).
- Navy-blue V-necked pullover.
- Navy-blue gloves.
- School tie (striped for Year 9 and 10 and blue for Year 11).
- Navy-blue ribbed or wool pantyhose.
- Woollen scarf (if desired) of navy blue and red stripes.
- Regulation leather lace-up shoes, college brown with low heel.
- The School blazer is worn in the street at all times.
Seniors (Year 12-13)*
Summer (Terms 1 and 4)
- Regulation check cotton dress worn mid-calf with the senior tie.
- Plain brown sandals without socks or flesh coloured panty-hose worn either with the sandals or with regulation leather lace-up school shoes, college brown with low heel.
- Navy-blue V-necked pullover in inclement weather.
- School blazer piped in red braid with monogram on breast pocket for street wear.
Summer (Terms 1 and 4)
- A kilt, worn 7cms length below the knee, in regulation pure wool worsted material which may be bought locally or made to measure from Helean Kiltmakers in Dunedin

* Year means year of school not chronolgical age of the student. Years 9-13 in New Zealand used to be referred to as form 3-7.
Physical Education uniform
Sports shoes. Navy-blue shorts (length at least 15cm above the knee); white 'polo' shirt with collar. Navy-blue track pants and school sweatshirts are optional.
General
No make-up or coloured nail varnish is to be worn with school uniform. Should ears be
pierced, small studs only may be worn solely in the ear lobe. Jewellery is otherwise
forbidden. Dark glasses may be worn only with a medical prescription. A nylon raincoat of approved navy-blue shade or a parka of navy-blue or safety yellow. The uniform must be work correctly at all times. If there are any problems the student should bring a note for temporary exemption from a parent to the Dean. The Parent-Teacher Association runs a second-hand uniform shop. The contact telephone number is available from the School Office.
