New Zealand school publications commonly show a heavy emphasis on sports. We see fewer details about academics. This varies from school to school. Perhaps academics is more difficult to report. Perhaps because most sports are team sports and many students are interested in sports that so much attention is given to it. Of course while sports are important, it is academics that in the long run will affect a studen's future. The publications do provide interesting information on the academic achievements of the students.

Francis Douglas Memorial College, 1996
1996 has been a year of many positive events and admirable achievements. It was good to begin the year by congratulating Julie Borrows and En Jin Chua on averaging almost 90% in the Bursary Examinations sat at the end of 1995. In fact, congratulations can go to a great many of our students for continuing to maintain a very high standard of academic achievement
