Young Enterprise is an extra-curricular program where the students plan a commercial project. The conceive a business model, manufacture a product, and market it. There is a simolar program in America, but the name of the project eludes me at this time. This is normaly a program for senior secondary students.

Subtle Scents: Young Enterprise

This year's Glenfield College Young Enterprise company "Subtle Scents" is a group of 12 enthusiastic 6th and 7th form students from all walks of life. From the start of the year it was all go with the appointment of 5 directors being first on the agenda. Then there was the difficult task of choosing a product that would set us apart from other companies and also to find a product with versatility and originality. After weeks of seliberation we finally settled on heatpacs. These comprised of wheat and a variety of scents including, lavender, cloves and plain scented. We also had a choice of materials ranging from navy blue with teddy bears on them to green tartan checked. Our prices were: $2.95 small pocket size, $6.95 long size, $8.95 large size. We wanted our product to have a natural approach so we opted for heatpacs to be packaged in corrugated cardboard, decorated with green and gold ribbon. Inside we placed a list of suggested uses and a set of instructions. Further in the year while experimenting with new ideas, we made a heatpac teddy bear. This was an instant favourite and became the bulk of our sales. To include the school in our venture we hired some commission sales people who found themselves greatly rewarded for all their work. Because of these sales people we gained heaps more sales which led to more profit and lastly more return on our investments (an added bonus!) I would like to personally thank our 3M nentor Laurie Newman for all his and 3M's support and to Mr Perrow for his dedication to help keep us afloat. Last but not least, a thank you for all the support throughout the community because without you we couldn't have had the enjoyment and the learning experience.

Tracey Allen, "Glenfield College, 1996".
