Reflection

A message ....

Life for all of us is spoken of as a journey and the journey for each of us is a muriad of exeriences in which we grow towards freedom and integrity as a person.

Experience is a kind of huge spider catching every airborne particle. When we have the responsibility for engendering the experience of our young people, we have to maintain a sense of delicate balance especially in the face of media which would have us believe that we are not living unless we are eating, wearing or doing the latest. It is the integrity of the person which must be safeguarded at all costs.

Growth and change are the indicators of life and journey whether it be in the intellectual, emotional, spiritul or physical ways and it is the function of schools to act as agents of growth and change within the lives of individuals within our society.

Francis Douglas Memorial College is a school which attempts to bring together parents and teachers who encourage students to step forward in understanding of themselves, their God and their world.

From the Staff Representative on the Board of Trustees

A mistake commonly made with a school like ours is to interpret tradition as being educational conservatism. In my sixteen years of teaching here, I have been proud to observe mang changes which maintain our traditions yet keep our school abreast of modern trends. We are in our first year of significantly increased self government. With unchartered obstacles emerging in the rapidly changing field of educational administration, the challenge of the Board is to steer the schoolon a steady, rational course, protecting an internal environment in which boys can continue to achieve, each to his potential.

Staffing

The Board of Trustees is very proud of the achievements of our students in the academic, cultural and sporting arenas in 1996. These successes are enhanced by the quality of our teaching staff and I would like to acknowledge their dedication and loyality to the school, especially during the protracted teachers contract negotiations. This is of considerable concern to the Board and we hope the answer to this problem will be found quickly. In the meantime our aim is to make the working conditions for all staff (and students) to be as attractive as possible so that Kelston Boys will be seen as the place to be. We have been sorry to see many fine teachers leave the school this year, the most prominent of whom was our former principal Mr Graham Henry. His contribution to Kelston was outstanding and we wish him well in his new career.
