New Zealand school magazines and annuals give consderable attention to sports and the results achieved by the many different teams. And given the sports policies promoting participation, each school has a very large number of teams. The coverage includes many accounts of particular competions.
Once again the Junior High teams competed well and held their heads high against much bigger schools that have weekly sports sessions amongst themselves. Our teams looked smart, behaved well and were in Fair Play consideration in all areas. The trip was rounded off with a QEII swim, a movie, The Wild Wild West (not great according to the 30 critics ) and the normal mall crawl and McDonalds.
Greymouth Junior Highschool
Eden Park, Auckland, August 24
The Blues were given first chance to score
After losing six pre-season games
They weren't given a chance against Auckland's big names
Proud cheers went up as we scored again
None of the supporters were heard to complain
They showed phenomenal endurance and power
Never once did they cower
Eleven point deficit with twenty to go
Get the ball to Magon was the scenario
This gallant Taranaki side refused to lose
With strange tactics, continuing to bemuse
Amber and Blacks pulled a major comeback
With amazing strength and fierce attack
The country was shocked
And Auckland was mocked

The School has an enviable reputation for success on the sports field and 1996 can only exceeded this. The School has won 3 national titles this year -- Touch, Softball and Rugby -- and the 1st XI Soccer finished as runners-up in the national tournament. Such success can only be achieved with the total dedication of all concerned and I doubt that any other school in the country could boast such a record. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all our sportsmen and teams on their commitment, sportsmanship and achievement during the year and thank the staff for their hard work and dedication as coaches and managers of our sports teams.
