Art is one of the most popular non-academic subjects. Many of the students involved are quite passionate about art and the older students have often impressve portfollios to show case their skills. Many students have quite strong memories of their art teachers and classes.
As in every year, Art has been fun and interesting. Mrs Hodgins and Mrs Hayward are two great Teachers. They have really succeeded in motivating us at every session. This year the Form Two students have been making Tiffany Lamps, Tiles, Flowers, Birds, Frames, Still Life paintings and for Enrichment, Carvings and Masks. The Form One students made Frames and Portraits(pastels), Tiles, House Plaques, Constructive Prints; Polynesian and Insects. Highlights this year have been the Aotea Exhibition with a photo in the Central Leader and the Art Department provided ceramic gifts for important people in Singapore and Japan.

Slowly, over the past few months, you may have noticed the construction at the Art Block. Well, finally it's finished and Boys’ High is now equipped with one of the best Photography and Art suites in the Manawatu area. The new additions include a brand new darkroom, a new artroom, more storage space, new offices and a brand new computer room containing nine new Apple iMacs in all flavours, grape, strawberry, lime, tangerine and blueberry.
Seven new enlargers have been added in the upgrade to the new darkroom, all are the new Multi-Grade style, supplied by the Photo Warehouse. The darkroom has been designed for adequate safe lighting and ventilation with a new wash area. The total of enlargers is now 12
which will make it much easier for the large number of 6th and 7th formers taking it as a subject.
The students are very happy with the new facilities as it makes
everything so much easier. Emmet Riddle, a photography student said: “Aw, it's pretty cool eh”. A new computer suite has appeared at the back of F2. The new iMac computers, not only look good, but are excellent for graphic design. You may be wondering why the school has chosen Macintosh computers over the usual IBMs. The answer is simple. Macs are much faster and more efficient than IBMs when it comes to graphic design.
Photography and Art teacher, Mr Keith Dobson, said, “Macs are used
in the graphic design industry and in polytechs, so it’s important that
students can gain experience with them. All of the computers are
eventually going to be networked with the school system. Another addition that has not been noticed much is that F3 has been
turned into an art room, this is because the huge increase of art students. A new sink as been added as well as new furniture and a storage area.
