It has been the cause of acute concern to witness the lamentable decline in the use of the English language in New Zealand. Daily one receives excruciating reminders of this in the bumbling efforts of television presenters who assail us with a violent collision of vowels without an intervening consonant. I fer the standard of written English is no better. One important goal this college could pursue in the next few years is to effect a significant improvement in our use of language, that we may write with both accuracy and flair as well as speak with clarity and verve.
