British Preparatory Schools E-Book: Countries

Figure 1.--Here are two boys at a boarding school in Scotland. Their school uniform is indistinguishable from the uniforms worn at English prep schools. Scottish schools do have some destinctive uniform items, but for the most part the boys wear the same uniform styles as English boys.

By British Preparatory schools we are talking about the prep schools in the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is composed of four different countries: England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. There are some other constiyents such as the Isle of Mann and the Channel Islands, but the four countries are the principal constituents units. All of Ireland was once part of the United Kingdom, but the country except for the northern colonies (Ulster) separated in the 1920s and formally created the Irish Republic in the 1930s. There are preparatory schools in all four countries. The academic program and uniforms at the preparatory schools in each of the different countries are very similar. The general educational program in Ulster and Wales are quite similar to England. Some differences exist in the Scottish educational system. There are also some differences between preparatory, but they are quite minor. For the most part it is impossible to determine where the schools are located from aby examining the available images. There are some destinctive features of Scottish preparatory schools in particular, but even here it is very difficult to tell from photographs--except when the Scottish boys are wearing thir kilts. The major difference is in the accents of the children.

The United Kingdom

By British Preparatory schools we are talking about the prep schools in the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is composed of four different countries: England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Britain essentially anned Wales and established English law (1536), The term united Kingdom came into use after the Act of Union with Scotland (1707). At this time Scottish law and institutions werepreserved. There are some other constiuents such as the Isle of Mann and the Channel Islands, but the four countries are the principal constituents units. Ireland was once part of the United Kingdom, but the country except the northern counties (Ulster) separated in the 1920s as the Irish Free State and formally created the Irish Republic in the 1930s. One confusing point. The island with England Wales and Scotland is Great Britain. Thus the population can be referred to as British. Ulster is more complicated. Thecountry is part of the United Kingdom, but referring to them as British is controversial. The Protestants generally want to use the term as they oppose union with the Catholic south. Ulster Caholics, however, generally object to be calling British.

Preparatory Schools

There are preparatory schools in all four countries. The academic program and uniforms at the preparatory schools in each of the different countries are very similar. The general educational program in Ulster and Wales are quite similar to England. Some differences exist in the Scottish educational system. There are also some differences between preparatory, but they are quite minor. For the most part it is impossible to determine where the schools are located from any examination of the the available images. There are some destinctive features of Scottish preparatory schools in particular, but even here it is very difficult to tell from photographs--except when the Scottish boys are wearing thir kilts. The major difference that we could detect was the accents of the children. Perhaps are readers will be able to provide some insights here. Most of the images in this volime are of from schools in England and to a lesser extent Scotland. The great majority of the British population is English and as a result most of the schools are located there.
