British Preparatory Schools: Specific Activities--Events
Figure 1.--One popular event at most schools is the annual summer fete. These events vary from scool to school. Many schools incourage the children either as individuals or groups to set up booths. The proceeds go to school programs or charities. This boy based his booth on an electricity lesson in his science class.

Schools, especially boarding schools, have a variety of special activities for saturday and sunday evenings as well as various weeknight evenings. Commonly films are shown saturday evening, but they are a wide variety of other activities at different schools. At St. Richard's a senior boy gives a lecture saturday evenings and debates are often conducted sunday evening. There are also many special, often seasonal, events.
Special Annual Events
Many schools sponsor a variety of special annual events. All schools have annual sports and prize days and most sponsor fund-raising fetes in the summer term. A variety of other events such as speech days, open days, plays, concerts, recitals, holiday events, sports events with parents and/or staff, are fairly standard from school to school. Many schools have their own special events. Stroud school, for example, has an annual Eisteddfod week during the end of the spring term. Every child is encouraged to make their own unique contribution to the event. There are house events (choirs, choral speaking, plays, and physical training display teams) as well as individual events (art, handiwork, modelling, piano, public speaking, and singing). Competitions are also run in all school subjects. The important events are judged by outside ajudicators and the best performances are included in the Eisteddfod Concert performed in front of the parents at the end of the week.
Informal Events
The children are also able to enjoy a wide range of "wide" games, both organized and informal. Games such as British bulldog, capture the flag, hide and seek, and kick the can are perenial favorites. [Patrick: Can you recall any other games?]
