We almost never observed any disruptive behavior. The young teenagers emerging from the modern prep, school have acquired very impressive academic skills, perhaps a year or two ahead of children with similar abilities in the state system. The real accomplishment of the prep schools is that can achieve these results with children of average abilities. Virtually any school can achieve impressive results with academically talented children. Some prep schools do cater to especially gifted children, the British would say clever. Most prep school children, however, come to their schools with a wide range of abilities. Britian has instituted a program by which parents can determine how well the children at any specific school does in comparison to other schools on standardized national curriculum tests. The annual tables are called School League results are published.

Academics

Schools of necesity focus on academics. There is probably a greater focus on academics today then in the past when sport tended to be more important than is the case today. Here the focus and priorities vary from school to school. The schools also vary as to the academic capabilities the program is pitched. While a few schools cater to gifted children, most prep schools design the program for children of average abilities. These schools generally have a scholarship form for high achievers and offer individul attention for those having difficulties with the academic program. Some children joining the school later than the other children may have some difficulty because they may find the other children are ahead of them.

Business-like Classrooms

We noticed in school after school, orderly business-like classrooms with children dilligently persuing their assignments. We almost never observed any disruptive behavior. The teachers were able to get the students down to work and were able to focus their efforts on the material at hand and the academic needs of their students.

Prep-school Graduates

The young teenagers emerging from the modern prep, school have acquired very impressive academic skills, perhaps a year or two ahead of children with similar abilities in the state system. Virtually any school can achieve impressive results with academically talented children. Some prep schools do cater to especially gifted children, the British would say clever. Most prep school children, however, come to their schools with a wide range of abilities. The academically talented are chalenged in scholarships, but even children of average ability can usually achieve striking results.

School League Results

Britian has instituted a program by which parents can determine how well the children at any specific school does in comparison to other schools on standardized national curriculum tests. The annual tables are called School League results are published. These are available for English schools. The tests are controversial. Teachers unions have critiised them. Some of the other U.K. countries have opted out of the system in part. The results can be a useful tool for parents, but it is not a simple matter of finding a school with the highest results for a child. Many other factors needed to be considered when selecting a school. The Government's School League tables show how well a school has performed in examinations. Much more informative is the Ofsted reports which show how well the school is doing on a range of other issues such as the quality of the lessons or the performance of teachers. Of course this is a much more subjective measure. The School League results are a much more narrow assessment, but they are useful and have the advantage of not being subjective.
