Uniforms Garments: Kneesocks--Colors

Figure 1.--Most British boys had grey kneesocks. A few schools in Scotland, however, had colored kneesocks, like this school with red kneesocks.

The most common color for kneesocks were grey. The great majority of British prep schools had grey kneesocks as part of the school uniform. Virtually all English schools had grey kneesocks or grey socks with colored tops. Many boys wore plain grey kneesocks, although quite a few schools had stocks done with bands in the school colors. These banded socks were almost always grey socks. Often girls wore white kneesocks instead of grey ones. The white kneeocks were not commonly worn by boys, although some boys did wear white kneesocks fpr cricket. While English boys almost always wore grey kneesocks, boys in Scotland often wore a variety of colored kneesocks, including blue, purple, and red.

White

Often girls wore white kneesocks instead of grey ones. At some schools girls also wear gey socks, but white socks for girls are very common. The white kneeocks were not commonly worn by boys, although some boys did wear white kneesocks fpr cricket.

Colors

While English boys almost always wore grey kneesocks, boys in Scotland often wore a variety of colored kneesocks. There may be some schools in England with colored kneesocks, but we did not notice any. At least none come to mind at this time. We have noted blue, purple, maroon, and red kneesocks in Scotland in addition to the same grey kneesocks worn in England. I am not sure why Scotland is so destinctive in this respect or just when this difference developed. These colored kneesocks or only worn with short trousers, never with the kilts also worn at Scottish schools.
