Uniforms Garments: Sweaters--Sweaters

Figure 1.--The boys at this prep school wore plain grey "V"-necked sweaters without any trim with grey shirts, grey shorts, and plasin grey kneesocks. Other schools had colored sweaters, but the grey sweaters were the most common.

School sweaters were all plain colors. There were no patterned sweaters worn as part of school uniforms. The standard color for school sweaters was grey. Well over half the prep schools had grey sweaters. This of course matched the trousers which were for the most part either grey or black. We notice different shades of grey, but this is in part because of washing or variations among manufacturers. Even at the same school there would be variations in the grey colors. Many boys wore plain grey sweaters, but sweaters with trim in the school colors were commonly used at many schools. Usually it was the grey sweaters that had the colored trim. Grey was not the only color for sweaters. Several schools had blue sweaters. We also noted brown, green, maroon, and red sweaters. Many of the sweaters that were not grey were crew-neck rather than "V" neck sweaters.

Grey

The standard color for school sweaters in Britain was grey. There were other colors, but grey was by far the most common. Well over half the prep schools had grey sweaters. This of course matched the trousers which were for the most part either grey or black. We notice different shades of grey, but this is in part because of washing or variations among manufacturers. Even at the same school there would be variations in the grey colors. This made some of the uniforms somewhat drab. At some schools the boys were dressed completely in grey with grey sirts, grey sweaters, grey trousers, and grey socks. The only touch of color in some cases was the tie. While some schools had plain grey sweaters, but sweaters with trim in the school colors were commonly used at many schools. Usually it was the grey sweaters that had the colored trim. Often the schools insisted the boys wear the regulation sweaters with trim , but others allowed plain grey sweaters as well which normally were less expensive.

Other Colors

Grey was not the only color for sweaters. We notice colored sweaters being incorporated into the school uniform during the 1970s. Brightly colored uniforms were not as common earlier. Several schools had blue sweaters. We also noted brown, green, maroon, and red sweaters. Many of the sweaters that were not grey were crew-neck rather than "V" neck sweaters. We also note some white sweaters, but these were more games sweaters than normal school sweaters.
