Boarding: Exeats and Term Breaks

Figure 1.--.

Many boarding schools provide the children a few exeats which they can take to be with their parents over theweekend. These are staggered so only a few children are away from school at any given time. The schools also may schedule short weekends where all the children can go home. There are also breaks scheduled between terms. The Autumn Term always ends with Christmas so the children are home with their families.

Exeats

In the autumn term there are two short week-ends and ahalf term. In the sprng there are two short week-ends only. In the summer there are two long week-ends (half term and the Whitsun holiday) and one visiting Sunday. In the case of parents who are overseas and other parents who are unable to take out their sons, arrangements are made for their boys to be taken out with the parents of other boys. All major school functions are, as far as possible, designed to coincide with an exeat or the end of a term. In this way the traveling of parents is kept to a minimum.

How Often Do Parets See Their Children?

The terms are divided by long week-end breaks every three or four weeks and in the Christms Term there is a 9 day half term. Parents are always very welcome at the school to watch matches etc and to talk to the Headmaster and Staff.

Parents

In addition to half term breaks there are normally three exeat weekends per term when children are free to be taken out from the end of morning school on the Saturday until bedtime Sunday evening. It is also possible for boarders to go out any Sunday during term, from after church until bedtime, unless required for school activities (play rehersals, choir practice, etc.).

Looking Back

The first thing I remember is ctually arriving back at school on Sunday 23rd April. My trunk was unloaded and taken to my dormitory. The holidays had eemed like "fast forward" on a tape-recorder, and thefirst week back seemed like "play". ...
