The changing character of the schools has meant that boarding has become a more humane experience for the children than was formely the case. Some children do not like boarding. In many cases it is necessary because of of a range of family situations. Boarding is a major adjustment for the children, especially the younger children. Most schools are very atuned to this and have ways of easing the adjustment. It should not be thought that the modern boarding experience is an unhappy experience. In fact most of the boaders at these schools like their schools and are happy at them. It is probably fair to say that most younger children would not choose to board. Most children, however, adjust very quickly. And some day children choose to boad. Agaan the reasons vary. Some find the daily comute a waist of time, leavig little time to do anything at home besides going to bed. Others have most of their friends at school and feel they are missing out on many activities by going home every afternoon.
At the beginning of this time I started boarding for the first time. At first I thought I was really going to hate it, but I soon got used to it and I like it a lot now. The other boys soon cheered me up.

The best time I've had in this school was when I first came. I was im Clumber dormitory and we used to have ace stories told by Jonathan Dearden, and we also used to have slipper fights. I have had great fun looking fter the mallards and the baby kestrel.

The boarding school I worked at for 6 months had a prep department which I was assigned to work. Mosrt of the boys when they finishef at the prep deparment went on to the senior school. It was a good place to be. There was always something going on. The children had lots of activities at the weekend. It was better than being at home. I thought the life they had was better than my childhood. They had a secret den which I never tried to find but pretended I was looking for. They were very proud of it. They climbed trees but were not supposed to do. It took them a while to get to like me. I think because I came on the scene halfway through the year was the reason for their stand offishness. Suddenly one warm Saturday March evening we were outside playing hide and seek and their attitude changed. They liked me waking them up in the mornings and waiting for my knock and wake up ryhme. Also lights out was not always easy but I got the boys settled and they were asleep until the morning.
