The children at most schools are also organized into houses. This reflects the organization of the public schools. The term varies. At some schools they are called clubs, but houses are the more common term. These houses are a particularly important aspect of boarding school life, but most day schools also have houses. Most schools mix the boarders and day boys in the various houses. Some have, however, separate day and noarder houses. At some schools the children wear badgs to mark their house. Prep school houses are different than public school houses in that they are not residential. Some schools do have a residential dormitry for the older children, but this is not their house.
As a long Michaelmas term draws to a close the Danes are still in contention for the Bliss Cup, although the Romans appear to have a commanding lead as we enter the last week of House Competition. I eagerly await the Under11 soccer clash with the Vikings, a repeat of last year's final, where we seek to gain revenge for that earlier disappointment, and the girls also have an excellent chance of winning the Netball competitions, having already secured the "Shooting" trophy. We have ridden a wave of fluctuating fortunes on the Rugby field, the Romans' and Vikings' squads presenting us with rather too much strength in depth, but under the plucky leadership of Bruce Ruddle, we gave a spirited performance against the Romans in the 12-a-side competition, by no means disgracing ourselves, and achieving victory over te Normans' Senior "Sevens" in the gathering dusk of a cold December afternoon. Perhaps our under 11 "Sevens" team could have shown the same determination in their match against the Vikings, where there was high expectation of victory after the comprehensive defeat of the Normans. The Cross Country competition provided us with second place at the Senior level and third in the Juniors, notable individual performances coming from Richard Pallister (Senior runner-up) and Thomas Virden and Mark Keysell, first and second respectively in the younger age group. Other competitions resolved to date have been the Indoor Hockey, where we shared victory with the Vikings, Rugby Kicking (3rd place and a fine individual performance by Bruce Ruddle), Tabble Tennis/Snooker (2nd =) and, of course, the House Music, in which we improved on last year's "wooden sppon" award by sharing the runners-up spot with the Romans. After an impressive start to the term on the "duties" front, we have slipped in recent weeks and, although Sam Markillie and Katie Goodison have been conscirntious in their role as House Captains, a number of abset-minded and carefree individuals have caused us to lose unecessary points by not performing their resomsibilities properly. Needless to say, I look for a better collective effort next term. This term we welcomed a number of new members to our flock -- Geoffrey Beck, Victoria Lee, Duncan Mayes, Matthew Paul, Clare Preston, Isobel Sallon, Henry Strw and Matthew Wilkins. We wih them every success and hapiness at Beeston, and, from myself and Mr. Morton, a happy Christmas to all Danes. Come back refreshed in the New Year.

.... We have, regrettably, to say goodbye to Miss Judd, and find it hard to believe that she has only been with us for two years. She has taken a keen interest in all matters relating to Grenfel, and her work with House Prayers (who can forget those animal stories?), sport, especially in relation to the girls, and a House Tutor has been highly valued. ....

Throughout the year Drke has done very well. We have proved ourselves again on the sports field. We won the football cup -- the seniors winning all three of their matches. The juniors did not have such luck, they won, lost and drew their matches, but still we gained the cup. We were also in a strong position to win the cricket (Mountbatten being all out for 17), but due to lack of time and terrible weather we had to stop the game. The house came second on sports day and we owe a lot of thanks to Mario James and the Hyslop twins. In the academic field we proved ourselves worthy by winning the house cup last term and this I would like to thank all the members of the house who gained numbers of house points -- but will stay clar of entries and starred entries! I do hope that Drake do well in the future, and good luck to the new houe captain. ... - David Gray, 13.9

An excellent effort by all four ho
iuses. Mountbatten were in the lead for all but the last fortnight of term when they jut pipped at the post by Drake. A special mention for two members of Nelson House: Gavin Walker (Form IV) earned 76 stars, and Roger Lee (Firm III) 71. Result (Summer Term): 1st Drake 34 points, 2nd Mountbatten 32 1/2, 3rd Beatty 25, 4th Nelson 24.
