Prep Schools: Definition

Figure 1.--These boys after classes abnd games in the afternoon are discussing how to use the available free time. One thing the children learn at the schools is how to make good use of their time, including precious free time.

The British prep school is a private educational institution to prepare younger children to attend public schools--private secondry schools. This of course means ascademically, but much more than academics goes on at the schools and much of this is also an important preparation for the public schools.Public schools are commonly referred to as senior schools. Most prep schools have links to nearby public schools and many of the children go on to that school. But many children go to other schools. Part of the school's job is to assess the child's capabilities and help the parents choose a suitable public school. This is sometimes difficult as parents often have a set school in mind for reasons other than the child's suitability. The prep and public schools constitute the backbone of the private sector, which the schools prefer to call the independent sector. The British prep school is different from an American prep school. Both are private schools, but the American prep schools is a secondary-level school preparing youths for university entrance.

The Work of the School

The briefing for parents, during which we sought to inform and reasure parents as to the whole process of choosing and getting their children safely embarked at the right Senior School, was well received and will be an annual event in the firstweeks of the Autumn Term at which any parent will be welcome but in particular the parents of FifthForm boys and Fourth Form girls. There is so much more to be considered than just the entrance exam. After all, if there is proper liaison between the schools and the parents, then the right aim can be made and no child should fail. To cram and scrape in may only buy a ticket to five years of misery.
