Assignment in a form is primarily based on age and based on the capabilities and needs of the average child. Of course children vary in capabilities and motivation. Thus some assignments are made to address the needs of the more and less capable children. Given the small size of the classes, the staff can more easily identify children with special needs and address those needs.
Progress up the School is determined more by ability than by age and so class groups are at similar levels of attainment and can move very quickly. A boy who has a specific problem in reading, writing or arithmetic can be coached by a visiting specialist on a one-toone basis once, twice or even three times a week until he has caught up. This has proven envaluable for dyslexic children.
