Going home for the day children is generally stasggered, depebding somewhat on the size of the school. The younger children go home first, especially the pre-prep. The younger prep school children go home a little later. Often their prep period is very short. Older children stay later. They have longer prep and are often involved in games, both mastches and practices. Again when going home the children are expected to put on the full uniform including ties and blazers and caps if the school still required them. Some schools also had footwear rules. Some schools are quite strict about the children being properly turned out at the end of the day. Other schools are more relaxed about this. A few children walk or ride bikes. Othesr take busses or trains which is common at day schools. Boarding schools may have small busses for the day children. Often parents pick up their children.
Watching over a silent, cloud-covered town,
Hearing the rain splish-sploshing down.
Sparking droplets on the trees,
Glittering and shining on the wet leaves.
As the rain pours quickly down,
A rainbow appears from sky to ground:
Blurring colours, faintly bright,
Betweem the wispy clouds, so whire.
Children are now coming out of doors,
Walking on the shiny wet floors,
Splashing and playing in the rain,
Tell the sun comes out again.

I attended Brone House, the prep school for Woodhouse Grove in Yorkshire. My brother and I were day boys. We were there just a few years after your visit. Mum drove us to school and collected us each adternoon. Our uniform was grey jumper with green trim, and grey short trouserss. Our blazers were also grey with green trim. As soon as we arrived home mum insisted that we immediately change out of our school uniforms to keep them clean and smart for school. We changed into jeans and t-shirts which is what our mates weee wearing. I first though that this was rather a bother, but as I got older I didn't mind. Shorts were becoming less common, especially grey school shorts, and I preferred to wear jeans even in the summer term.
