British Preparatory Schools E-Book: Volume III--Uniform Descriptions


Figure 1.--These boys wear the classic British prep school uniform, peaked cap, school tie, colored blazer, grey sweater (jumper) with colored trim, grey short trousers, grey knee socks with colored bands, and school sandals. Not all schools had uniforms precisely like this school, but this was the standard. 

Here we have brief descriptions of the school uniform at a number of representative schools. Most schools describe the unifirm as simple, but the full clothing list can be quite extensive. Scgools varies as to what other atributes they stress, but common decriptors are inexpensive, comfortable, and smart. Schools often make seasonal changes in the uniform.

Beachborough School

In the winter the uniform consists of grey trousers, navy blue jersey and a shirt of one's own choice. In the summer the boys wear shorts and aertex shirts. Suits are worn on Sundays. The games clothes can be obtained from Harrods and the secondhand shop. All the boys' clothes and linen are washed in the school laundry.

Bedford Modern School

The school uniform is as simple and inexpensive as possible. There is a school shop from which the uniform can be purchased. There is also a second-hand clothes' sale run by the Parents' Association.

Beech Hill School

This [the uniform] is neat, simple and colourful. All boys wear a green blazer with a yellow school badge and a matching cap. A school tie (green, yellow and black) is worn with a grey shirt, grey shorts and stockings. Sensible black shoes are worn outside and sandals in classrooms. Boys in the top two forms only, and who are over the age of 11, may wear long grey trousers.

Birchfield School

The uniform consists of a grey shirt and sweater, grey corduroy shorts; and a blazer, cap, and tie in the school colours of green and yellow. Senior boys are allowed to wear long trousers, and boarders need a grey suit. There is also a raincoat and overall. All clothes must be clearly marked with name and number. They nust also have loops for hanging. Shoes must be marked with the number. There is a different pattern of sweater and shirt for summer wear.

Dean Close Junior School

The school uniformis intended to be smart and practical but not extravgant. On week-days the boys wear grey corduroy shorts, grey shorts and lumber jackets. The School tie is maroon with a double silver stripe and socks are grey with block maroon tops. The girl's uniform consists basically of a grey skirt, maroon cardigan and blue check blouse. Maroon blazers are worn by boys and girls on formal occassions and on Sunday mornings. All items can be obtained at the School Shop and there is aflourishing second-hand shop run by parents.
