Uniforms Garments: Blazers--Usage

Figure 1.--Blazers were most commonly worn by the children coming and going to school. Once at school the children generally put their blazers away and just wore their shirts and sweaters. These boys are all heading home wearing their blazers.

Blazers were most commonly worn by the children coming and going to school. Once at school the children generally put their blazers away and just wore their shirts and sweaters. A typical school rule read, "The school blazer must be worn when travelling to and from school. In school grounds, the jumper may be worn as the outer garment." At boarding schools you usually do not see the blazer at all as they are put away for special occassions. The blazer is more prominany at day schools where chilsren may wear them during the day, depending on the school rules. Here we see boys at a day school wearing their blazers on the way home after school (figure 1). Some schools did away with blazers entirely for the summer term, but most retained the blazers year round. Blazers were also worn when dressing up for special occassions such as when important visitors were coming to the school. They were also worn for church on sunday. Some schools had the boys wear their blazers for events like field trips. Here therewas some variation. Other schools let the children wear their ordinary casual clothes. This depended to some extent on the type of field trip.

Coming and Going to School

Blazers were most commonly worn by the children coming and going to school. Almost all schools requited the children to come to school in the school uniform, including the blazer. There was some seasonal concessions here. A few schools with casual summer uniforms did not require the children to wear blazers when coming to school. Once at school the children generally put their blazers away and just wore their shirts and sweaters. A typical school rule read, "The school blazer must be worn when travelling to and from school. In school grounds, the jumper may be worn as the outer garment." Here we see boys at a day school wearing their blazers on the way home after school (figure 1).

School Day

At boarding schools you usually do not see the blazer at all as they are put away for special occassions. Here the goal was to keep them for good. The blazer is more prominany at day schools where children may wear them during the day, depending on the school rules. Some day schools had the children hang up their blazers until time to go home to protect them. This was actually more common for day boys at boarding schools. Other day schools let the children decide, rather lie the common approch to jumpers. Here the blazers tended to get some hard wear. We noted boys playing games in their blazers during morning break and the lunch break. (At boarding schools there usually was no lunch break, but rather a short rwst period for the children to lie down on their beds.) We even noted boys wearing their blazers during gym. Here a factor was the weather. The boys were more likely to wear their blazers on a chilly day.

Seasonality

Some schools did away with blazers entirely for the summer term, but most retained the blazers year round.

Special Occassions

Blazers were also worn when dressing up for special occassions such as when important visitors were coming to the school. They were also worn for church on sunday. Some schools had the boys wear their blazers for events like field trips. Here therewas some variation. Other schools let the children wear their ordinary casual clothes. This depended to some extent on the type of field trip.
