Photo Essays: Uniforms Garments--Rainwerar


Figure 1.--Here a boy at this prep school wears a non-ujniform rubberized poncho on a rauiny day. Schools varied on their approach to rainwear.  

Preparatory schools as far as we know did not have raincoats. This is interesting because it rains quite a bit in Britain. Rather than raincoats, the children use theur cold weather coats like gaberdine overcoats or duffle coats when it rained. The coats are not water proof, but do the job of keeping the children drey. And umbrellas can be used when it rained during the summer term. We see some boys wearing raincoats or ponchos, but they seem to be non-uniform items. Here the uniform schools had various rules. Some schools did not object while others did not want non-uniform items worn.
