Kilts were worn at many Scottish schools. This has varied over time. A few schools had the children wear kilts as a normal school garment, but by the 1980s the kilt was normally used as a formal dress-up uniform for special occassions and church. Boys normally wear kilts to church or for a variety of special fubnctions. Sometimes they are worn on school outings. They are also worn for Scottish dancing which is taught at most scools. The schools tended to discourage the boys from wearing kilts during the day because of the chance of soiling the kilt which is an expensive garment. Headwear was no longer worn with kilts, in part because most schools had discontinued the school cap. The kilts were normally worn with a tweed jacket in a neutral tine. Blazers were worn at some schools, but a short jacket was more common. The cut of the jackets is fairly standards, but detailing such as the sleeve buttons varied somewhat. The color of the jacket is up to the boy. A white shirt and tie, although often not the school tie. Boys selected the particular tartan they want to wear. There are many klan tartans to choose from. The kilt is a destinctive garment, more involved than the tartan skirts worn by girls in America and often called kilts. Boys wear their kilts with a leather sporran to gary money or other items as there are no pockets in kilts. Knee socks were worn with the kilts. This might be the regular school knee socks, but often plain grey or a neutral tan or green knee socks were worn.
Kilts were worn at many Scottish schools. As the kilt is a garment assiciated with Scotland, this is understandable. We do not note kilts in Welsh oe English schools, but apparently they were worn in a few Irish schools. The prevalence in Scoland varied. They were not worn at all Scottish schools, but quite a few had the boys wear them, mostly for special occassions.

The kilt is a male garment. Thus it was initially worn at boys' schools. As far as we know it was not worn at girls schools, even girls schools in Scotland. This is interesting because outside of Britain, a common school uniform item for girls is a plaid, pleated skirt. We do note some girls in Scottish schools wearing kilts. This appears to be almost entirely at boys' schools thathave gone coed. At those schools the girls normally wear skirts abnd dresses, but for formal occassins when the boys war kilts, the girls do likewise.
