Uniform Hosiery: Gender--Types

Figure 1.--At this school during the winter term the girls could wear either grey knee socks like the boys or grey tights.

Girls wear a variety of hosiery types with school uniforms. Most schools had definite rules about hosiery. The most common hosiery at the modern prep school are ankle socks and knee socks. Historically long over-the-knee stockings were very common. Girls continued to wear long stockings after boys for the most part stopped wearing them. Knee socks seem by far the most common typoe of hosiery, but ankle socks are also worn, especially during the warmer summer term nonths. Often the kneesocks and ankle socks are the samr\e colors as the boys, but some schools had the girlsear destinctive white socks. Another option for the girls is tights. Before World War II, Long stockings were once worn at many schools. They seemed most common at conservative girls' schools and were worn as much for modesty as warmth. Long stockings generally disappeared after the War, but were replaced by tights. This is usually an option for the winter term. Tights were never worn by the boys. Tights were not very common. Knee socks were the dominant hosiery types, but some girls wore tights. At masny schools it was option. At a few schools, mostly girls' schools, they were required. them.
