Uniforms Garments: Grey Kneesocks Shades

Figure 1.--Here we see the variety of grey shades that were common in thevknee socks wirn at prep schools. Some mums bought cheaper hisiery and the socks became lighter as a result of reprated washings.

Hosiery and several other uniform items were grey. There are greys and there are greys. We see many safes of grey both for trousers and knee socks. Some schools were more concerned anout this than others. Theoretically the problem should have been solved because each school identified a school supplier. And the supplier provided grey items from the same manuficturer so the boys were identically outfitted. In practice it did not always work out like this. Thrift mums often bought grey items from the department sttore chains which offered cheaper grey trousers and knee socks that could be substituted for the items at the ouffitters. Few schools took issue with this as long as the vitems were grey. It mean, however, that the vboys commonly wore grey items, especially the trousers and hosiery which were aide range of grey shades. This was further complicated by the fact that shades changes as a result of repeated washings, becoming gradually lighter shades. There was also the matter of school tranfers. Nums would try to use as much of the pld uniform as possible instead of buying new items.
