Photo Essays: Uniforms Garments--School Sock Colors


Figure 1.-- There were quite a few possible color combinations, but with several hundered schools, some cominations or similar combinatiins were worn at several different schools. A few schools have very destinctive cominations that were not worn at any other school. The school here had particularly destinctive colors, magenta knee socks with brown tops. 

There were many different combinations. Some were more common than others. The grey socks were the most common and the school colors were normally done in the school colors, also commonly used in the cap, blazer, and tie. Shades of blue, red, and green were the most common. Some schools might add a mpre destinctive color like yellow. While most of the socks were various combinations along this line. This gives quite a few possible color cominations, but with several hundered different schools, some cominations or similar combinations were worn at several different schools. A few schools have very destinctive cominations that were not worn at any other school. The school here had particularly destinctive colors, magenta knee socks with brown tops (figure 1). Prep school school stocks usually had to be purchased in the school outfitters. No other school wore this comination. More basic sombinations were adopted by state schools and state-supported religious schools with uniforms. Some of these were so common that they could be purchased in the chain stores. There were two different types of school socks. One was the socks sith colored bands at the top. The other were socks where the entire turn over top was a soli color.
