Uniforms Sweater: Other Colors--Shades

Figure 1.--Grey was the most common color for sweaters, but many other colors were used. The brightest of these were some of the red sweaters.

Several schools had blue sweaters. Here there were several shades. A dark navy blue color seems to have been the most common, but we note a few schools with royal blue sweaters. In addition to blue we noted quite a few other colors being used for school uniform sweaters. We also noted brown, green, maroon, and red sweaters. Red was the brightest color we saw being used for school sweaters Many of the sweaters that were not grey were crew-neck rather than "V" neck sweaters. We also note some white sweaters, but these were more games sweaters than normal school sweaters.

Blue

Several schools had blue sweaters. After grey, blue seems to have been the most common color. Here there were several shades. A dark navy blue color seems to have been the most common, but we note a few schools with royal blue sweaters.

Brown

Brown was not a very popular color, but we noted a few schools with brown sweaters, both dark brown and tan.

Green

We did not notice many schools with green sweaters. Most schools had grey sweaters of course. And among the schools with colored sweaters, only a few had green ones. The schools we saw all had dark green sweaters. There were different shafes, but all dark green. They were also all crew-neck sweaters, at least the ones we saw. "V"-neck sweaters were more common at prep schools, but several schools had V-neck and other types of sweaters. We don't recall any green V-neck sweaters. As a general rule crew necks were usually done in colors other than grey. This one might think would mean that the schools did not require ties for the normal school day. The V-necks were designed to be woirn with ties and crew necks were not. The cre necks of course rather cover up the tie. Discarding theties for crew-neck sweaters was, however, not always the case at the schools--probably because wearing ties at prep schools was so common. We noted several schools where the children wore ties with crew-neck sweaters. The green sweaters we saw were all plain green sweaters. We have not noted green sweaters done with school color trim as was common with grey "V" neck sweaters. The green sweaters were not worn with green blazers. One school had a grey blazer with green trim. The other school did not wear blazers at all.

Maroon

Only a few schools had maroon sweaters.

Red

After blue, red was probably the next most populsr color. We believe that this was a relatively recent development. When blazers were more commonly worn, few schools had brightly colored sweaters.

White

We also note some white sweaters, but these were more games sweaters than normal school sweaters. White sweaters were often worn for cricket. Some of the white sweaters had colored trim, but not in the school colors like the grey sweaters.
