Most school uniform items were required. The boys had to wear them as part of the mandatory school uniform riles. The sweater was a rare exception. Here it was up to the boy or girl if they wanted to wear the sweater as parttof their uniform. Here the major determinant was the weather. Sweaters were most commonly worn during the winrer term. The weather in Britain is highly variable. Thus thete can be cool days even during the summer term. Thus the sweater was a handy garment to ghave handy for cool days. The sweaters were worn both with and without blazers. As the blazers were often not work during the school day, we mmostly see the boys wearing them without the blazers. Most schools did not seem to have a rule about when sweaters were worn. The children put them on and wore them as they found comfortable. Here the children varied a great deal. Some of the boys wore them all day regardless of weather changes. Other boys might not put them on even if it was l little chilly. If the weather turned warm, they were often discarded and if not labeled commonly made their way to the school lost and found. The sweater thus caused more trouble in this regard than sny other garment.
