The Kennedy Grandkids

Figure 1.--The Kennedy Grandkids were photographed with their grandmother in 1972. Note only one boy wears a short pants suit, although another wears play shorts. One boy wears double strap sandals with white socks. Note the long hair popular in the 1970s.

Family

Joseph and Rose Kennedy had nine children. Even though four died in tragic circumstances and one had to be instituionalized. While only Senator Ted Kennedy survives, there is a large number of grand children and great grand children to carry on the Kennedy name. The most famous is of course, President Kennedy's son John Jr. The most numerous contribution to the Kennedy grandkids were the large family of Robert and Eunice Kennedy.

Clothes

As the children of a wealthy and infuential family, the clothes in which the children were dressed are a good reflection of contemprary styles. I have noted the following fashion trends. Let me know if you see anything I have missed.

Suits

Most of the boys do wear jackets and ties, although sports jackets are strngly mixed in with conservative suits. This is especially true of the younger boys who had more to say about selecting their own clothes.

Only one by wears a short pants suit, a happy little chap in the front row. He wears a classic Eton suit with Peter Pan collar and kneesocks. He looks to be about 6-7 years old. I'm not sure which of the Kennedy grand kids he is.

Shorts

Only one other boy wears short pants and he wears play shorts rather than dressing up.

Sandals

One boy wears double strap sandals and white socks with a blue blazer and grey long pants, a somewhat unsual combination. Double strap sandals were usually worn with short pants, although by the 1970s they were not bering commonly worn by boys. I'm not sure which Kennedy he is either.

Hair Cuts

Almost all of the boys wear long hair. The younger boys, presumably more influenced by mom, have their hair cut at medium length. Several of theolder boys have quite long shoulder-lerngth hair.
