The children of Edward and Alexandria grew up in a loving environment. This was often not the case in royal household. Edward by all accounts was a loving if not always present father. British royals in the 19th and early 20h century often did not get on with heir sons. This was the case of the Hanovarians, including George I-IV. And in some cases with their wives. This was not the case of Edward. He was not distant or unsympathetic. Alexandria was a loving and unlike most royal mothers st the time played a very important role in the raising the children. THeir care was not all left up to nannies. Mot royal mothers focused mostly on the swirl of court social life. This was not the case of Alexandria who also had to contend with a demanding Queen Victoria when the children were young. While Edward gets high masks for fatherhood. This was not the case for his behavior as a husband. He was not faithful to Alexandria. He had many mistresses. Interesting his second son, the future George V dramatically different. He was a loving husband, getting high marks and faithful to his wife. His role as father was just the opposite. He was a distant father figure and authoritative. His children viewed him very differently then Edward's children. Queen Mary of Teck was a much less engaged mother, which was he more common pattern of the day. The children were primarily raised by nannies. The fact that the first two nannies were incompetent and abusive was not immediately notice by their parents. George in particularly was abused. The much loved Charlotte Jane 'Lala' Bill trported the mistreatment bof the children and became the head nanny until very late (1897). The treatment of Johnnie was particularly cruel. Wesuspect that Alexandria would hve treated him differently.
