Crown Prince Rupprecht's Son Luitpold: Clothing--Headwear

Figure 1.--This portrait of Prince Rupprecht's son Luitpold was probably taken about 1906. He would be about 5 years old. Note the sailor cap he is holding. Unfortunately we can't read what is on is cap band.

We are uncertain what kind of headwear Luitpold wore. Virtually none of the images we have show him with any kind of headwear, in part because they are mostly indoor images. We do have a few photographs of him wearing a sailor cap as both a younger and older boy with his sailor suit. It looks to be an identical cap in the different phoographs despite the differences in his age. He also of course wore a peaked military cap with his cadet uniform. We do not know what kind of hats and caps he wore with his other outfits. Almost certainly he diud have a variety oif caps and hats, because in the early 20th century one did not nrmally go out doors wthout ome kind of headwear--especilly when dressing up.
