German Royalty: Württemberg--Duchy of Urach

Figure 1.--This photograph of Duke Wilhelm's family looks to have been taken in 1907. First row from left: Karl Gero (1899-1981), Duchess Amalie of Bavaria (1865-1912), and Eberhard (1907-1969), Albrecht (1903-1969), Elisabeth (1894-1962), and Margarethe (1901-1975). 2nd row from left: Maria Gabriele (1893-1908), Duke Wilhelm (1864-1928), Carola Hilda (1896-1980) and yhe future Duke Wilhelm III (1897-1957) at Wurtemburg.

Urach is a city and the capital of the Duchy since the 12th century. The Sovereigns of Württemberg have resided in Urach several times. I do not know much about the city. A German internet site yield this which I do not understand, "There are special memories of the time when (Urach) was a residence and „Oberamt“ town. {„Oberamt“ in the German text was in the time of the Württemberg kingdom the name of a second level community site with a court and some administrative offices (for e.g. tax collection). During the division of Württemberg (1442-1482) the counts of Württemberg resided in the city. For centuries Urach also was the administrative, trade and business center for a large part of the Central Swabian Alb". "Alb" is a Swabian word, meaning Mountain(s). " ( Es sind insbesondere Erinnerungen an die Zeit als Residenzstadt und Oberamtsstadt. Während der württembergischen Landesteilung (1442-1482) residierten die Grafen von Württemberg in der Stadt. Jahrhundertelang war Urach aber auch Verwaltungs-, Handels- und Gewerbezentrum für einen großen Teil der Mittleren Schwäbischen Alb.") The modern title of Duke d'URACH was given in 1867 to Count Wilhelm of WURTEMBERG which was the son of the Duke Wilhelm von WURTEMBERG (1761-1830) and of his morganatic wife Wilhelmine baroness von TUNDERFELDT-RHODIS (1777-1822).

The City

Urach is a city and the capital of the Duchy since the 12th century. The Sovereigns of Württemberg have resided in Urach several times. I do not know much about the city. Urach in modern times remains a very nice, picturesque spa town. Urach is a very nice, old town at the border of the Schwäbische Alb, now a spa. It was of some economic, trading, and political importance, but was not a major commercial center. It belongs now to the Landkreis (something like a „county“ in US) Reutlingen and is certainly not a main economic centre as the „advertisement“ of the present city officials claim. There is a (realitively) small, old castle of about 1485.

History

A German internet site yield this which I do not understand, "During the wuerttembergischen landing hurrying (1442-1482) the counts of Wuerttemberg lived in Urach. For many centuries Urach was in addition, administration -, handels and trade center for a large part of the middle Swabian Alb. " The translation of „Landesteilung“ is misleading. In former days, especially in those parts of Europe where not only the oldest child/son was the heir of the family resources, it was often the case that a county was splitted amongst the children/sons. The „württembergische Landesteilung“ in the15th century was such a case. ( Es sind insbesondere Erinnerungen an die Zeit als Residenzstadt und Oberamtsstadt. Während der württembergischen Landesteilung (1442-1482) residierten die Grafen von Württemberg in der Stadt. Jahrhundertelang war Urach aber auch Verwaltungs-, Handels- und Gewerbezentrum für einen großen Teil der Mittleren Schwäbischen Alb.")

Duke of Urach

The sovereign family of Urach and the royal relatives of Württemberg split in early medieval days. The modern title of Duke d'URACH was given in 1867 to Count Wilhelm of WURTEMBERG who was the son of the Duke Wilhelm von WURTEMBERG (1761-1830) and of his morganatic wife Wilhelmine baroness von TUNDERFELDT-RHODIS (1777-1822).

Duke Wilhelm von WURTEMBERG (1761-1830) married Wilhelmine baroness von TUNDERFELDT-RHODIS (1777-1822). It was a morgantic marriage.

Count Wilhelm of WURTEMBERG, Duke of Urach I (1810-1869)

The modern title of Duke d'URACH was given in 1867 to Count Wilhelm of WURTEMBERG son of Duke Wilhelm. Wilhelm was born in Stuttgart during 1810. He married Princesse Theodelinde de BEAUHARNAIS (1814-1857) in Munich during 1841. He remaried in Monaco Princesse Florestine de MONACO (1833-1897) during 1863. There were six children. 1) Princesse Augusta Eugenie von URACH (1842-1916) was born in Stuttgart 1842. She married Lichtenstein 1865 Rudolf Comte von ENZENBERG zum FREYEN und JOCHELSTHURN (1835-1874) in 1865. Duke Wilhelm died in 1869 when his son Wilhelm was only 5 years old.

Count Wilhelm WURTEMBERG, Duke of Urach II (1864-1928) King of Lithuania (1918)

Duke Wilhelm was born in 1864. He married Duchesse Amelie of Bavaria (1865-1912) in Munich during 1892. He remarried after World War I agian in Munich to Princess Wiltrud of Bavaria (1884-1975) in 1924. There were nine children. 1) Princesse Elisabeth von URACH - (1894-1962) married Tegernsee Karl Prince von und zu LIECHTENSTEIN (1878-1955) in 1921. 2) Princesse Karola von URACH (1896-1980). 3) Duke Wilhelm von URACH III (1897-1957) married Elisabeth THEURER (1899-1988) in 1928. Princesse Margareta von URACH (1901-75). 6. Prince Albrecht von URACH (1903-69) married Rosemary BLACKADDER (1901- ) in Oslo during 1931. He divorced her in 1943 and remaried Div. Berwang (Autriche) 1943 Ute WALDSCHMIDT (1922-1984) in 1943. They were divorced in 1956. There were three children. 6) Prince Eberhard von URACH (1907-69). He married Regensburg Princesse Iniga von THURN and TAXIS (1925- ) in 1948. There were five children. 7) Princesse Mechtilde von URACH (1912-2001) married Lichtenstein 1932 Prince Friedrich Karl zu HOHENLOHE-WALDENBURG-SCHILLINGSFURST (1908-1982) in 1932. Duke Wilhelm was made King of Lithuania by Kaiser Wilhelm II in the closing months of Worl War I (June-November 1918). I am unsure why the Kaiser chose him. The Germans had defeated the Russians on the Eastern Front and had a commanding military position throughout Eastern Europe. They forced the Bolshevicks to sign the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, essentiallu recognizing German control of the Baltics, Poland, and the Ukraine. The failure of the German 1918 Spring offensive in the West and tge collapse of the subsequent collapse of the German Army and Armistace (November 11) undid the German position in the East and Wilhelm had to leave Lithuania. After the Armistace there was fighting between the Allies, Lithuanians, Germans, Bolshevicks, and Poles. The French for a few years maintained a small garison in Memel which was to be a Free City under a League of Nations mandate, but were eventually expelled by the Lithuanians.

Reader Comments

A Germany reader writes, "For me your picture was of much interest because I have known a daughter of one of the princes in the picture as a colleague in engineering; she was born around 1930 (and died around 1990); I can‘t remember her Christian name; she had a university diploma in mechanical engineering and worked for Daimler AG in Stuttgart."
