School Uniform: Hair Cuts

Figure 1.--The school cap became a symbol of the English schoolboy because it was so widely worn. Both boys and girls wore boaters, but only the boys wore peaked caps.

While not a garment, hair cuts are generally dealt with at schools as part of the dress code. Thus for organization purposes, the garment page seems the best place to deal with this issue. Hair styles like clothes fluctuate greatly from time to time. As a result, school hair regulations have also varied over time.

In my high school there was a hair code for boys (short back and sides) that broke down when no one observed it. For girls no perms, streaking, colouring, wigs or other fancy hair stuff. There was a shoe code too and a no jewellery or make up rule for girls. The shoe code broke down as well. One valiant principle in the year before I hit high school tried to enforce the hair code by spending every lunch hour in the lunch area sending boys off to get a haircut - sometimes paying for it himself. It was his favourite hobby horse.
