Skirts and Pants worn with Sailor Suits: Trousers

Figure 1.--This American boy wears a white sailor suit with long trousers. Such outfits were often the first long pants boys wore. This photograph was probably taken in the 1890s. It was taken in Boston, Massachusetts.

Boys in the 19th and early 20th century often wore long trousers with their sailor suits, usually the bell bottom style. The long pants sailor suits were not the most common, but they were available as early as the mid-19th century. Often boys wore long trousered sailor suits even though the rest of their outfits were kneepants, knickers, or short pants. Often the long pants worn with a sailor suit were the first long pants a boy might wear. Long pants appear to have been especially common with the whire suits. I'm not sure why this was as the white suits were for summer wear.
