Nationale Jeugdstorm: Background

Figure 1.--This poster promoted membership in the NJS. I'm not sure what the Dutch words say. Notice the seagull emblem. Notice the reflection of Fascist idelogy. The boys are shown as both determined and organized in disiplimed ranks.

A Dutch reader has supplied some basic information on the founding and political affliliation of the Nationale Jeugdstorm in Dutch. A HBC reader has kindly provided an accurate translation. We are retaining the Dutch text which our Dutch readers may find helpful.

English Text

The Nationale Jeugdstorm (NJS) was founded on May 1st 1934 by the deputy leader of the NSB, C. van Geelkerken. On February 1st 1936 the organisation was dissolved after being declared unlawful by the (Dutch) Supreme Court and changed into a "democratic" association: the Vereniging Nationale Jeugdstorm. One month after the German invasion the organisation took back its old name again. Membership of the Jeugdstorm was voluntary, and all "aryan" boys and girls between 10 and 18 years of age could join. The leadership for the greater part was in the hands of adults. Although the Jeugdstorm until 1940 tried to appear as a non-political club, the ideas were mainly a reflection of the NSB ideology. The Dutch SS attempted to get the Jeugdstorm merged with the Germanische Jugend, a Hitler Jugend-led organisation that was meant to unite the youth of all Germanic countries. Mussert and "Head Stormer" van Geelkerken however, tried to keep the Jeugdstorm's national character as long as possible. They refused to give in to a German proposal to form a Jeugdstorm battalion that was destined to join the Hitler Jugend division of the Waffen SS, although some Jeugdstormers did fight at the Eastern front as volunteers on their own initiative. At its peak the Jeugdstorm counted 16,000 members
