European Royalty: Russia--The Tsaraevich Alexei's Sailor Suit Headwear


Figure 1.--Alexei is wearing his white flat-toped sailor cap here. He also had similarly styled dark ones. He is with one of the sailors assigned to his car. I'm not sure what kind of shoes he is wearing.

While he commonly wore sailor caps, I have no noted photographs of him in sailor hats. We have noted two types of caps. Presumably both were styles actually worn by Russian sailors. As a younger boy he wore a soft white cap. As an older boy he wore both white and dark flat-top cap. Both were worn with streamers. I'm not sure what was written on the cap band where the name of a sailor's ship commonly appears. There was a round badge above the cap band.
