South African Boy Scout Uniforms: Cubs

Figure 1.--These South African Scouts were photographed in the 1980s lined up for an activity program. Note the traditional green peaked Cub cap.

The South African Cub uniform seems quite similar to the Scout uniform, except for the cap. The Cub Scout uniform consists of the traditional green Cub peaked cap with yellow trim that was worn by British Cubs for so many years. This cap was the first Cub cap adopted by many countries all over the world and is still worn in South Africa. The South African Cubs wear tan shirts and matching short pants. with dark green knee socks. They wear the traditional colored kneckerchiefs. The Cub uniform seems quite similar to the Scout uniform, the primary difference being the destinctive peaked cap and dark green kneesocks.

History

We have no information on South African cubbing history yet.

Publications

A South African reader has sent the cover of a Cub publication. 'Fun in Cubbing' was published by The Boy Scouts of South Africa. It has no publishing date but I think it's from the 1980s. The boy climbing the tree seems to wearing bulky socks and glumpy shoes. I should think that the boys today would be allowed to wear track type shoes for their activities instead of bulky (and expensive) leather lace up shoes. The book itself includes a wide range of Cubbing activities.
