Boy Choir Movies

Figure 1.--This boy is from the German Knabenchor Hannover.

A few films have dealt with boy choirs in several different countries. These countries are documenraries about choir in general or brief visits with specific choirs. There have quite a few documebntaries, but mos focus on specific films.

L'Or des Anges

One of the few documentaries to take an overall look at choirs in several different countries is L'Or des Anges. Although I have seen only a few clips from this video, I am listing it because it has obvious importance to boychoir and cathedral choir supporters. It was first available only in French and PAL format, but English and NTSC versions are now available! Director Philippe Reypens says of his production, "This film traces the history of the most celebrated choirs of the Western (Europe) tradition along with the personal development of the singers' individual careers."

Choirs featured are the Worcester Cathedral Choir, Knabenchor Hannover, Wiener Sangerknaben (Vienna Choir Boys), Les Petits Chanteurs a la Croix de Bois, and Polskie Slowiki, a 150-voice Polish choir. Music in the flim includes "Nunc Dimittis" (Parsons), e Musik" (Schubert), "Balualow" (A Ceremony of Carols by Britten), "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" (Bach), "Bastien und Bastienne" (Mozart), "Le Duo des chats" (Rossini), "Brundibar" (Krasa), and "Pie Jesu" (Requiem by Faure). There are also excerpts from music by Pergolesi, Bach, Allegri, and Tchaikovski.

The film shows boys making that 'bit step' toward the fun and rewards of singing with other boys and men.
