Figure 1.-- Here the Vienna Choir Boys wear their uniforms with the caps at a recent concert tour. |
The cap is the traditional style worn presumably by the Austrian Navy. Although largely land locked, Austria-Hungary had Adriatic ports in the Balkans and northern Italy. Austro-Hungarian Empire still had a navy or up through World War I. The German word for cap is "Mütze". An E-Bay seller describes the cap as Mütze eines WIENER SÄNGERKNABEN (vienna choir boy) Beschriftung: "Wiener Sängerknaben" + Ö sterreichisches Staatswappen. Größe: 56 Maße: ca. 24 cm Durchmesser Alter: ca. 50 Jahre alt Hersteller: LITTO KAPPE, Wien VIII LANGEGASSE 13 Am inneren Rand befindet sich die aufgenähte Nummer 53, vermutlich zum Wiederfinden !" The cap was blue with a wide cap tally reading, "WIENER SÄNGERKNABEN". There was a streamer at the back. There was a crest at the front, I think with the Austrian national seal.
