Costumes of Boy Musical Prodigies: Matthew Leigh (Australia, 1991?- )

Figure 1.--Joseph (Matthew Leigh) interprets Pharaoh's Dream . He wears a white slaves tunic, cummerbund, and white pantaloons. Pharaoh (Andrew Scallia) is dressed as Elvis. Both boys wear head microphones. The gold manacles are lined with foam and slip on and off like bangles (Matthew said they were "very comfortable").

Matthew Leigh, Australia's answer to Alled Jones, has been singing since he was 3 years old. Veteran star of the musical stage, he played the crippled boy in Amahl and the Night Visitors. His latest feat is to take the lead as Joseph in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. At the age of ten, he is a very normal boy, with a love of sport, including Rugby league, which he plays at the junior level, and like the boy in Billy Elliot, he enjoys dancing. Because of his age, it is hard to forecast Matthew's future. The singing life of a treble in Australia is very short, as puberty occurs early in boys because of the hotter climate and healthy lifestyle. Hopefully, Matthew will make a few albums before his voice fades into history. It is possible that he will continue as an adult if his voice makes the transition from child to adult, but this rarely happens.
