Sargeant is best known for painying high-scoety peoole in gotgious fashions. Here he has mastereda fast flowing saklmoin stream. Sargent's portraits were mostly of subjects from wealthy families that could aford his hefty fees. And the subjects are dressed up in their best outfits. He was brilliant at capturing wealthy people in their fashionable clothes. A rare exception is a genre painting of a boy salmon fishing. Sargent painted it on a vacation in Norway (1901). As far as we know, the boy's name is unknown. The boy is not done up in high fashion. He is wearing a suit and peaked cap. Not exactly fshing togs, but at the time wealthy people dressed up to fish and hunt. That said, this boy looks to be sport fishing and not fishing for family consumption or sale. If the location was not known, we would have thought given the school type cap, that the painting wold have been done in England or Scotland.
