Unidentified Belgian Boy (about 1870)

Figure 1.--Here we see a Brussles boy, probanly in the late 1860s or early 70s. Note the white or light-coloted ribbed stockings. Early knee pants tended to be longer lengths like this. Also notice the bowler (derby) hat.

We have no information on this unidentified Belgian boy, except that he was from Brussels. The fancy suit suggests to us that we was from an affluent family. He looks to be about 10 years old. We believe that the portrait was probably taken in the late 1860s or early 70s. Notice his bowler (derby) hat. The suit is a little difficult to describe. We think it was a cut-away jacket. It seemns to be decorated with buttons. He wears white or light-coloted ribbed stockings. Early knee pants tended to be longer lengths like this.

The Boy

We have no information on this unidentified Belgian boy, except that he was from Brussels. The fancy suit suggests to us that we was from an affluent family. He looks to be about 10 years old.

Chronology

We believe that the portrait was probably taken in the late 1860s or early 70s.

Clothing

Notice his bowler (derby) hat. I'm not sure how common this was for Belgian boys. The collar is a little difficult to make out. I think there may be a small bow. The suit is a little difficult to describe. We think it was a cut-away jacket. This is a little difficult to tell because we think the boy is wearing a vest or under garment made of the same material as the jacket itself. It seemns to be decorated with buttons, at least we think that they are buttons. He wears white or light-coloted ribbed stockings. Early knee pants tended to be longer lengths like this. A reader writes, "I noticed the ribbing of the stockings. This is interesting because almost all other white stockings in our collection of images would appear to be smooth-textured. You may be correct that these are long stockings, but I wonder if they could be knee-length white socks. This might explain the ribbing. And this boy wouldn't need long stockings with such low-cut trousers." There seems to be a garment laid on the table.
