German Family Photograph Album: Unidetified Youth Group Uniforms

Figure 1.-- Here we see the boys having a lunch break during a hike. The boys commonly wear knee socks. Some boys wear long stockings, but rolled them down and wore them like kneesocks. The various photographs in the album provide us a good idea of the uniform.

We thought it was the Hitler Youth at first because the uniforms are similar. The shirt and dark shorts as well as the belt buckle look like the HJ. The leather suspenders, however, were not like the straps worn by the HJ boys. We can't make out the colors involved, but they look similar to those of the Hitler Youth. We do not notice the boys wearing caps. And more importantly there are no NAZI insignia. We notice banners and patches that do not seem to be HJ regalia. The obly patches the boys here wear is the heraldic cross on their left sleeve. The boys commonly wear knee socks. Some boys wear long stockings, but rolled them down and wore them like kneesocks. The various photographs in the album provide us a good idea of the uniform.

Caps

We do not notice the boys wearing caps. There are several photographs of the boys in this youth group included in the album. None of them show the boys wearing caps.

Shirt

The shirt and dark shorts as well as the belt buckle look like the HJ. We can't make out the colors involved. The color look similar to those of the Hitler Youth in these black and white photographs, but of course we can tell just what color they were. The HJ shirts were brown. We do not know what color these shirts were. The shirts have flap pockets, but the buttons are different than the HJ buttons.

Neckerchief

The boys wear neckerchiefs which were very common for youth groups. They are plain colored neckerchifs. The neckerchiefs at first glance look like the HJ neckercchiefs. The HJ neckerchiefs were black. These neckerchiefs look like a different color, but we can't tell what color.

Suspenders

The boys wear leather suspenders. They are quite a bit different than the more military looking shoulder straps worn by the HJ boys.

Belt Buckle

The boys have destinctive belt buckles. The photograph is not sufficently shrp to make out the design of the buckles. The shape and color is rather like the HJ buckles.
Short Pants

The boys here wear short pasnts. They look to be a shade similar to their shirts. Other phoogrphs seem to show the boys wearing black shorts like the HJ uniform.

Hosiery

The boys commonly wear knee socks. All the photographs seem to show th boys wearing kneesocks. Some boys wear long stockings, but rolled them don and wore them like kneesocks.A reader writes, "The boy here hasd rolled down his long tan cotton stockings for the look of knee socks. But these are obviously not knee socks. He has probably unfastened the supporters attached to his Leibchen and substituted round garters for the knee-socks look. Long stockings, even when rolled down, would not stay in place on their own because there would be no elastic in the stockings themselves. So he needs to use round garters here."

Insignia

The boys have almost no insignia or badges on their shirts. Some photographs show boys wering a kind od heraldic cross shield on their left sleee. Most boys did not hve the bsadge. Therecare no no NAZI insignia or regalia. We notice banners and patches that do not seem to be HJ regalia.
