Dutch Sailor Suits: Familiy Fashions


Figure 1.--These two Dutch boys have been addressed in virtually identical sailor suits. HBC is unsire for how long they were dressed identically and at what age the older boy began to wear a standard style.

Dutch mothers would in some occassions dress all the boys in the family, or at least the ones of appropriate ages in identical sailor suits. This custom appears to have been most common in the late 19th century when boys of a fairly wide range of ages wore sailor suits. The boys here about 1885 wear virtually identical suits. For some reason the collars are slightly different. The boys appear to be about 10 and 13 years old. The only significant difference is their hair style although both boys sear sdhort hair--the younger boy appears to have an almost shavecd head.
