New Zealand secondary schools have classes to prepare senior students for life after school. These classes address a wide range of topics. These classes generally are directed to less academically oriented students who are not planning to attend university. The single most important is how to apply for, get, and keep a job. Many other topics. however, are addressed. The students are provided actual work experiences with local compamies.
The programme of Work Exploration has been maintained as a significant
component of the year‘s course. This has again been made possible because
numerous individuals and business houses have provided the opportunity and
advice to boys. As a result, confidence in the workplace and practical
learning have been gained in a practical setting on at least one day of each
week.
Although it is not expected that students will find employment with the
business or individual concerned, it is always pleasing to discover that an
individual has gained part or full-time employment, a bonus without a doubt.
This year in Transition, Unit Standards have been offered in the field of Core
Generic in Form 6. In 1998, Form 5 Transition will include some of these
Units, and in Form 6 Work Skills. These will be increased and be virtually all
Unit Standards.
Thanks to all Transition staff and to the local employers who work together to
make this course such a valuable experience for students in their last two
years at school.
