Afternoon Activities: Going Home--Uniform

While the children usually dressed informally in shorts asnd sweaters while at school, going home involved getting properly dressed. This varied greatly from school to school. But at most schools, the children were expected to smarten up when preparing to go home. After classes and afternoon activities, the children put on their blazers and in some cases caps. Often while at school they may take their ties off after classess, but put them back on to go home. At other schools the children may change out of their school sandals into proper shoes. At many others schools they wore their sandals to go home. The younger children were often supervised with this, in part because they usually went home after classes. The older boys were expected to do this on theor own. Most schools want the children to look smart when going home, believing this reflects on the image of the school and how prospective parents may evaluate the school.
