Uniforms Garments: Blazers--Day Wear

The use of the blazer differed, but there were some common approaches during the ordinary school day. Most schools did not have the children wear their blazers during the school day. This varied, however, from school to school. The children at some schools wore their blazers during the day, but this was not very common. This normally ocurred at day schools. The boys at quite a few of the day schools we visited had many boys wearing their blazers. This was not required, but left up to the boys. Normally some boys did and others didn't. This was much less common at boarding schools. Here the schools generally had the boys put away their blazers which were normally worn for speciall occassions such as Sunday chapel. Some schools used the blazers more than others. The most common approch was just for the boys to wear just their shirts with or without a tie or when it was chilly a jumper.

No Blazers durng the Day

Most schools did not have the children wear their blazers during the school day. This varied, however, from school to school. This was by far the general approsach at boarding schools. The blazers were put away for special occassions. Here the schools generally had the boys put away their blazers which were normally worn for speciall occassions such as Sunday chapel. Day dschools were more varied. Sone schools had the children put away their blazers and discouraged the children from wearing them. At other schools the blazers were available during the day if the children wanted to wear them.

Mixed Usage

The children at some schools wore their blazers during the day, but this was not very common at boarding schools. This normally ocurred at day schools. I'm notentirely sure why this was. I thin generally the boarding schools tended to take a greater responsibility for the children's clothes. Day schools tended to take the attitude that this was the pasrent's responsibility. The boys at quite a few of the day schools we visited had many boys wearing their blazers. This was not required, but at many schools left up to the boys. Normally some boys did and others didn't. Here some boys might even wear their blazers for oplay during morning break. This was discouraged at some schools because of wear and tear on the blazers. Other schools seemed to have ignored this. Generally the boys wore their blazers for play primarily to keep warm on a chilly day.

Blazers during the Day

Some schools used the blazers more than others. The most common approch was just for the boys to wear just their shirts with or without a tie or when it was chilly a jumper. There were , however, some schools where the boys commonly wore their blazers to class. This was a formal approach that we believe was more common earlier. We understand that earlier many schools required boys to wear their blazers during classess. We found tht by the 1980s that this was no longer very common.
